Superior labral tear (SLAP)

Read the sections below to understand the problem, assessment and care options.

What is it?

A tear in joint fibrocartilage may follow injury or degeneration; an MRI finding alone does not establish the source of pain.

Symptoms and important signs

Joint-line or deep joint pain, catching and sometimes locking.

How is it assessed?

History and examination; selected MRI or other imaging.

Care and treatment options

Activity modification and rehabilitation; repair or other surgery in selected tears.

When to seek help

A truly locked joint or inability to bear weight needs early assessment.
